Zhou Chen's Lesson

Nice pics used. Clip was interesting. BUT Zhou Chen needs to work on his interaction with his students. Show more enthusiasm and smile a lot more. There were also mistakes in his sheets. Remember, a writing lesson always needs a sample as guide. We will wait to see the new Zhou Chen.

  1. Good points—The two contrasting pictures about the earth are a wonderful idea to discuss the topical issue—environmental pollution. I do like the list of environmental problems which covers a wide range of issues. The video he has chosen is beautiful full of contrasting scenes and views as well involving animals, plants, lands and water.
Aspects to work on—More elaboration is much needed for the entire lesson period from the set induction (students’ interpretation) to brainstorming the causes of environmental problems and to the writing instruction. Apart from that, the passion of a teacher is definitely desirable in the classroom, a large scale in particular.

  2. Good points - The video was really nice and touching, it enhanced the awareness of what are the problems on our Earth. Confidence was also there in my opinion

Aspects to work on - the class seemed a little bit chaotic. At times the students were still talking and giving their points while Vincent kept going on with next issue. Students seemed mixed as well as what is the focus on. More interaction would be preferable, plus more explanation on some aspects if general, or just focus on few specific and go about it.

  3. The video that Zou Chen has picked for this presentation is an interesting video to catch students' attention because it not only shows how/when/why/what pollution is happening, but also the effects of pollution. This is good because it engage students to think about the effects of the pollution.

Besides, the list that he prepared is actually a good initiative. It is helpful to the students, especially the weaker ones and it can be used as a material to encourage students to learn about different types of pollution with their own effort.

As for the teaching, although this teacher seem a little disorganized at times, he is able to pinpoint who is not paying attention and call upon them to answer questions to get them back on track. Trust me, it works, because I was one of the 'lost' student. Another thing to improve is that, there should be more guidance for lower proficiency students i.e. sample essay. This teacher should let go more and communicate more with the students, it will make the class more lively and students more willing to learn. Besides, Zou Chen should really make students talk more, for example he can ask students to brainstorm in groups about the list of environmental problems that he gave.

  4. I like the video Zhou Chen have chosen but environmental issues have been very 'mainstream' in my opinion and would need an extra edge if to be taught as a lesson in class so that students could learn meaningfully.

I think Zhou Chen have clarity in his voice but he should take control of his classroom more. Don't be afraid to call out students whom are not listening. Zhou Chen also has a tendency to go on talking even when students are obviously lost- don't leave us! Or the students might set an expectation never to listen in class anymore.

Zhou Chen have a lot of capability to be a good teacher (with his good looks and clear voice) so have more confidence in taking control of the lessons.
