Ellina's Lesson

She makes such a cute lil teacher. Ellina must NOT be too sweet and friendly. Do not accept answers in chorus. Get individual students to answer your questions. Her clip on smart shopping via technology was ever so interesting. However, she moved on to getting students to roleplay as shopper and shop assistant. She gave guides to students but unfortunately, the students didnot bother using the guides given. They had a short roleplay and an item was bought without any discussion of discounts, advantages or descriptions. Teacher Ellina, you must facilitate better. Also, link the clip to the roleplay activity. We spoke about this in class. Can anybody remember the importance of having flow and continuity in your lesson?

  1. Ellina: Good points—Ellina has chosen a remarkable and striking video clip related to her lesson topic. She played the video with the sound off first and let her students to guess what the woman was doing, which is quite creative and intriguing. After watching the full video, students were all shocked. Great set-induction! The underlined words regarding the advantages of clothes are useful.
Aspects to work on—Confidence is a must for an effective teacher, which is shown via his/her voice projection, good eye contact with students and firmness and clearance in the class instruction. Ellina will surely do far better when she enhances her confidence. Additionally, connection between the activities, ranging from watching the video to the dialogue making is essential to the students since many students were baffled by her instruction and got lost.

  2. Good points - Ellina is very very cute and adorable and definitely likable, the video was fantastic even though at the end it went off slightly from the main theme but still, the choice made the students very excited and more lively. The activities were fine, too.

Aspects to work on - just as Wendy said, first thing that comes to my mind is confidence, in order to avoid a situation that students take over the control in class, need to show them that you are not willing to allow them :) Other than that maybe there was a slight mix up with the activities, from what I thought is that there were two sheets, for lower and higher proficiency where the lower got extra vocab. in the box, if so - that is great, but some people said that the work sheets differed a bit.
Overall I enjoyed your class, Ms Ellina :)

  4. First of all, I really really love the video that Ellina has picked out because it is such an interesting video! For the usage of the video, I like how she paused the video halfway through and ask the students to guess what the video is about. I find this as a very nice trick to engage students' critical thinking and imagination besides spurring them to be more creative. This also creates suspense among the students and after guessing, they will automatically be very interested to continue watching the video, to find out what is it all about. Well played, Ellina!

I also like Ellina's idea to ask her students to act as shopkeeper and customer for this speaking class, as it is not everyday that students get to play a role like this. However, this activity can be further improved with Ellina guiding the students more on the presentation. For example, she could have asked the students to include certain words in their conversation, because this will show how they use the words correctly and it shows if they understand it or not. Without using certain guided words, it seem as if students are just creating their own dialogues which is not in context with the lesson anymore.

Also, during the vocabulary activity, teacher could give clearer instructions as some students got confused.

All in all, Ellina has a lot of potential and she has took a great first step. However, at the same time, she also has some other points to work on. They key is not to give up and be as creative as you can in lesson planning!

  5. What a refreshing video to have! I like how it would relates and interest especially the young girls in a classroom. Ellina also keeps her students on their toes by pausing the video and asking the students what was going to happen next, it makes the students think.

Role playing is great but since she did not clear the air about having to follow guidance nor mentioning what is the objective of the role play makes it quite confusing halfway into the activity. Which was a waste because it was a good lesson to have!

Ellina should also be firm with her voice given her slim figure so the classroom would listen to her while she teach. 30 boys may overpower her if she does not set a firm expectation.
