Our Beloved Jack

What were his positive points and what were aspects that he could work on?
Instructions should not be too long. Students will get restless waiting for the instructions. They should be precise and to the point. To make it easier for yourself, phrase the instructions before class and either distribute the instructions on a piece of paper or write them on the board. That way, you wont need too long to explain the instructions. Also, try your very best NOT to use the rule-based approach. the Malaysian English Curriculum for Secondary Schools promotes the use of the Communicative Approach. Teaching of grammar, therefore, should be embedded in context. Rules should be used in communication thus highlighting the indirect approach to teaching English. This applies to the others too who like to use direct teaching of rules. Communication is the key, okay? Good luck!
P/S Thanks, Cherry for this wonderful, green-friendly, photo.

  1. Good evening guys
    Good points
The pictures in set induction were attractive, but make sure that next time, the pictures you choosed should be related to your topic. In addition, I like your game, it was quite interesting and challenged. You always show us something new.

    Aspects to work on
Firstly, your direction of the lesson is not clear enough. All the materials that you used should be related to your toipc. Then, it will be better to write down the rules of your activity, either on the whiteboard or on the ppt. It helps students to understand it quickly and clearly. Lastly, try to be more confident next time, speak loudly when you are teaching in the class.
    thanks~

    1. thanks Wang Yi. Very good observation, there. Yes, his presentation of the different Apple sites from the US, China and Taiwan which showed different translations of job ads at Apple, had nothing to do with the topic that he was teaching. He has great ideas, but needs to relate better with his topic and his students. If he had taught about translations, the Set Induction would have been perfect.

  2. Hi everyone,
Jack’s lesson gave me a deep impression. His speaking activity was very interesting and memorable. I believed that we all enjoyed his activity. It was really a good idea which can be implemented in the classroom. However, you still had some problems in your class. Firstly, you showed two pictures at the beginning of the class. The purpose of showing them was not clear. Also, it couldn’t highlight the theme in this lesson. Secondly, you should shorten your instructions, otherwise students may feel confused, bored and distracted. Just make it short and clear. Overall, your speaking activity was fabulous. If you can continue work on your pre and post parts, it must be a perfect lesson. Be confident, Jack. Good Job!

  3. First of all I want to say sorry because I was not fully paid attention when he was teaching because I was focusing on answering the questionnaire. One of the good points that I love about Jack was his creativity. He always came out with something that really creative and we didn’t expect it. It was really good in attracting students’ attention. However, he still didn’t manage to relate the activity with his lesson. His activity was not related to one another; students were confused and did not know what they were going to learn.
Jack’s biggest problem for me was the way that he talks. Every time he was presenting, I feel like he wants to hypnotize all of his audience based on the speed and his voice projection. Like what Madame Adele has said, his instruction was too long. We cannot catch what he was talking about. I believe that he doesn’t have problem to speak louder, he just needs to change the style of him giving instruction and speak in front of the class.

  4. many of your friends think that you should improve the way you give your instructions in class. Take not of that. Shorten your instructions, go straight to the point and give only relevant information (related to the lesson theme/topic of the day) ok? Gluck!

  5. Hi everyone!

I like the per-stage activity. He let students guess the job, although the instruction of the game was too long and not very

clear. Anyway it is a great activity, it's very attractive. I think you are very creative but you must let every part of

your lesson connect to the topic. I kind of lost at the set-induction. I think your should pay more attention on the

arrangement of your lesson. And be more accurate about your instruction that you give to the students. Thank you.

  6. I agree with the point that Jack always brings something really creative to us. Students will follow you well if you always have creativity. But creativity should be used in a right way based on lesson and topic. And I like his activity which can make all students to take part of it. I think everyone enjoyed it. However, as our friends said that his set induction was too long and not related to the topic of the lesson. Besides, I think his speaking was not that good. It looked like he didn’t know how to express and explain which maybe because he was too slow. I think it’s better if he practice his speaking before he present.

  7. I do agree that Jack's set induction is way too far related to his topic. I seriously try my best to catch up with what he's trying to do with the translation for his Set Induction. His instructions need to be louder and clear enough. In a real class out there, I don't think students will focus on him. But Jack, I do believe that you can be a good teacher because you always came out with new ideas. I just don't know where you got the ideas from. You just need to focus on the topic you want to teach and if you're teaching in Malaysia, try to connect with students' interest. once in awhile, you can use something different from Malaysia. But if you keep on using something that is totally different, students might lost their interest in your lesson. Be more confident and smile ! :D

  8. It seems that most of you agree that Jack has very creative ideas but needs to channel his ideas better to relate to the topic he intends to teach in the classroom. Instructions also need to be improved. Take note, Jack and good luck.
