Bunmi Against Bullying

Bunmi continued his theme in his second lesson on Tuesday. In the last, he taught about women battery and this time his lesson was about bullying. The flow of his lesson was clear.
The clip used was effective, except that something went awry with the audio system. Not your fault.
We discussed about the suitability of the task: Four 3rd graders fighting over a turn with the football. Bunmi claimed that he has experienced the same situation with teenagers he coached. It is wise to cater to the need of the students and their context. BE mindful that in an all girls' school bullying can take many different forms, aka Facebook gossips, photo spams, chat threats, etc. As long as the context of the students is related to the task, okay?
I was at first confused with the next tasks you gave them: to create a stand up card and the other card on bullying. I wasn't sure of the difference at first. Some students may be confused as well. As long as you explain when asked, you should be alright.
Your friends seemed to enjoy your lesson fully. Here's Zhou Chen doing the matrix in class.
Lovely materials used in your lesson. You were as usual, attentive and gentle with your students.
Well done.

  5. Bunmi handled us well despite the fact that we did not give the desired result from bullying (we continued bullying the victim in the group activity). He was gentle and clear with his instructions to the classroom.

For the role play, it would be good if he ask clarity first on which character a student is playing before they start roleplaying so the classroom would understand better.

Some points to work with is being more clear with what is a flashcards and a stand up card. I know he had shown an example but because they were somewhat similar, for someone whom have never been exposed to both item may still find it confusing. I would suggest that Bunmi list down some description to differentiate the two. Such as giving the objective of both cards and where can we find them.

  6. Bunmi's body language and the way he bring himself in his lessons definitely shows that he is capable of handling a class. He gives this positive energy to students that make them want to participate in his class, and are not afraid of him. He is friendly to the students but not overdoing it, which is good because it has balance.

The topic for this lesson is good because bullying is something that we heard of all the time, some cases being more serious than the other. Therefore, it is a good platform to find out what students think about bullying and engage them in the activities.

For myself, whenever there is a role play I love it because we do not need to be glued to our seats listening to the teacher all the time. Role plays like this foster co-operation among the students as they learn to work in a group to come up with something the teacher wants and at the same time it is a student-centered activity which is great. Therefore, I really enjoyed the role play, especially being a bully at it! =D

I think the idea of making cards is good, rather than doing all the traditional writing writing and writing. It gives students a chance to showcase their creativity and also work as an opportunity for them to practice their writing skill in another context. However I have to say that the instructions for making the cards were confusing. We did not know whether a stand up card is to agree or disagree with bullying. Otherwise, good job Bunmi!
