Shahrul: Continuity is key

Well done on your presentation. It was clear and you presented passion in your teaching. The roleplay was fun but try connecting the activity with the previous pre-speaking activity on adjectives. Get students to use adjectives in the roleplay. You asked the students to write about the effects of smoking for the Post stage. You should therefore connect the roleplay to the effects of smoking. Get students to include the effects in the roleplay. You kept asking if the students could follow what you were teaching. Good.

  1. Good points—This time Shahrul slowed down the speed and took his time to explain and discuss with students. Apparently he has a very strong English; therefore, when students had confusion about what the adjectives are, he was able to explain clearly and simply. I like it! Besides, the role-play activity was intriguing and motivating. On top of that, the video clip was so captivating, a great set-induction.
Aspects to work on—It will be better if Shahrul links the adjective to the later role-play activity. During Post-Speaking stage, a discussion of the effects can be a good choice since it helps students brainstorm ideas for their homework.
All in all, Shahrul is a splendid teacher and passionate for his job!

  2. Shahrul is quite a natural at being a teacher, his voice and intonation is good and suitable. It is evident when he is explaining adjectives.

When students do not understand, he made other students explain to their friend instead of explaining it himself. (Honestly, I'm both impressed and envious of people who can think and act fast in situations like this because this is a very important trait that every teacher should possess to make lessons more effective and meaningful.) This is a good strategy to test students' understanding and promote peer-to-peer learning.

As for the role play, it was done in a fun way which lets students to present their creativity and talent in acting but it would be better if there is some guide for students to follow during the role play so that they don't run too far from the topic. Maybe the adjectives that Shahrul introduced during the earlier part of the lesson can be put into good use during the role play.

For the pre-speaking activity which consist of the cloze text, Shahrul should discussed it with students. Otherwise, students would not bother finding out the correct answers by themselves. I'd appreciate it if Shahrul took effort to dress up more accordingly :) All in all, quite good and suitable activities!
