The Lady in the Wolf Mask: Ashilla

Ashilla is ready for school. Her lesson was beautifully conducted. She gave a new version of three little pigs. the idioms were interesting to her sts esp 'kick the bucket' i wonder why...she gave the passage part by part n asked the sts to write to a newspaper. This makes her lesson easy to follow n meaningful. her explanations were clear n teacherly. she knew who wasnt paying attention-wendy (tummy ache). the only thing i could think of to improve her lesson is for her to make her instructions for essay writing clearer. Anything else?

  1. As a student in Sheila's class, I like how refreshing the set induction is. The teacher gain instant attention by walking into the classroom, wearing a wolf mask. Furthermore, it is very closely related to the lesson of the day so it kind of give students an idea.

I also like Sheila's interaction with her students as she did a good job engaging each of them to speak, and it doesn't seem forceful because everything is so natural, and this teacher has a pleasant personality.

The reading material that she used and also the activity were interesting and suitable. However, as a student, I wish that she could elaborate more on idioms (if they do not have a previous knowledge on idioms) as I feel that it is quite brief and some students may not be able to comprehend the figurative meaning, esp the low profi ones.

The strategy that Sheila used was well planned and effective, because she only let students read the first half of the story to create suspense so that students will be curious about the other half of the story.

However, as Sheila's peer in this course, I actually wondered for a while what was the theme of this lesson, as the story does not seem to be closely related to any of the themes (pollution/technology etc) but towards the end when she asked us to write a letter, i guess that the theme is values, which is correct.

Another thing is that the letter writing could be more meaningful to the students, as it is not a norm for students to suddenly write to the newspaper to share their views on having good values.

  2. There not many comments I can make on Shilla's lessons because she is just simply a PRO! I could say good things over and over again, starting with confidence, good voice projection, likability etc etc etc Can't think of any points to work on... Great job Ms. Shilla!

  3. Ashilla's lesson was simply brilliant! She's such a natural.. and sure enough a likable teacher. Her lesson was well planned and continuity was excellent.

She really try to engage her students in the discussion. She make sure no one is left out. For example, when the students are supposed to match the idioms to its correct meaning, she asked students who haven't volunteer to give answer.

One thing that she could improve on is to let students discuss more after reading the full article. It is not only to ensure everybody has read but to make sure that they understand the story.

  4. I like her set induction, I like the idea of wearing mask and asked the students to guess what animal she is. She started her lesson by asking the students to recall their previous knowledge about fabble which is brilliant. It can attract the students attention. The flow was very very clear. Students gain new knowledge about idioms. Even though she introduces some new idioms, but she provided help through her activity which students have to match the idioms to its correct meaning. Other than that, I think it was a great idea when she gave us the article step by step and not at once. The revelation of a different version of the Three Little Pigs story can attract the students attention since they never heard about the other version of it. All in all, it was well-planned, she was likable, helpful, and cute teacher. Awesome!

  5. Thank you all for your constructive feedback!

I choose 'kick the bucket' because I wanted to have a more interesting discussion and the fact that idioms are not usually what it seems (has its own story) should be reflected from here as well.

I loved preparing this lesson in particular and was overjoyed knowing the class shared my enthusiasm.

In my opinion, I should have find ways to allow the students to talk more rather than i do the talking, even if this is a reading class. Maybe ask the student's opinion about the esaay given and how it can relate back to the topic/idioms found.

As an educator, I could have also given a link to refer idioms to so students can do their own reading/research, this would also leverage on scaffolding learning.
