Jia Xin: Roaring loud

Must be louder and more confident in front of the class. The cartoon clip on deforestation is very attractive. Her activity where words were shown and read in chorus by the students left me wondering though. Secondary school students might think that the activity is a lil too childish. Please think about this when you visit the school for observation. Remember also to arrange answer choices for MCQs in order of shortest to longest or vice versa. we dont want students to pick the odd one out. Also, your friends and I were wondering whether the persona was a tree or an animal or others. You need to have extensive discussions of the poem you gave.

  1. Hi,
My comments about Jia Xin's lesson are:

Her set induction was interesting because she used video and funny animation which for sure can attract students' attention easily.
However, after that the activities for vocabulary skills were too easy, students just followed teacher's instructions and repeat the same word. Then followed by guessing the spelling of the words. I believe that maybe even low proficiency students will find it easy because they can guess and they saw the words before. It was more suitable for primary school students.

For the poem that she used, it was too difficult in term of vocabulary and the analysis.
She didn't discuss each stanza with the students, directly asked students to do the worksheet.
She should read through and understand the analysis of the poem first before she want to discuss it with her students.

  2. Hi everyone,

I like the video Jiaxin showed that day which was very funny and it impressed me most. The following activity was about learning words. She focused more on how to pronounce the words according to phonetic symbols below. I think she has good idea in this part. She not only made students know the meaning of the words but also the correct pronunciations. However, secondary school students may feel bored about just following teacher to repeat the words. So, you can think of another way to teach pronunciations. Moreover, you can discuss the poem with students before answering the worksheet since students are not familiar with this poem.
Overall, thank you for your lesson.

  3. Hello everyone! The video is very attractive; I think the students will like it. And the topic she chooses is suitable.

It relates with current issue and includes a sense of moral value inside her lesson. And the activity she used in while

reading is multiple-choice questions. I think it is a little easy for the high level students. She may create a harder one

for the high level students. On another hand, her voice is not clear enough and the way she teaches it’s too soft.

Over all, well done my friend you can do better next time.

  4. Good points:
A funny video for a set induction was good as it helps to attract students' attention at the very beginning of the class.
The poem about nature that being discussed in the class was good.

    Aspects to work on:
Pronounced the words as a read-aloud activity should not be continued in next class. Teacher needs to explain the poem stanza by stanza to students. Then, answers can be discussed after each explanation of the stanza. Students can be asked individually to answer the questions. It's better to have a short presentation by groups. Each groups should present one stanza. To arrange answers, the length should be from short to long.
