Five Meals a Day: Ideally Joy

Joy's lesson on healthy meals is meaningful and well scaffolded (Vygotsky, 1978). the clip on food types could be clearer. Cudnt really hear the words. some spelling mistakes- beacon, soya, and lollypop. it would also be great to have an actual good pyramid with lots of colours to dhow in class. her activities for sts to choose food types and select according to importance and portion were very interesting to her sts. well done. anything else?

  1. For Joy, she started the class by speaking to students about healthy diet and etc. which I genuinely feel that it is a good and direct way to get students into the lesson of the day. However, I also wished that it could be more fun because some students may be distracted with other things and may not pay attention to the teacher.

I like Joy's video because it is cute! It's such a pity that the video wasn't very clear, but good job for sourcing such a relevant and suitable video.

The activity that Joy did was good, because for the first activity, she asked us to fill in the pyramid with words that she wrote on the board. And on the paper, there were guides to help students, esp the lower proficiency ones.

The reading material is informative and it is meaningful to students because at their age, they are still growing therefore it's important to have a balanced food intake. Joy could have stressed on that more to make them pay more attention as it is related to them and then, they wouldn't think of the reading material as boring or "just another piece of article".

I also liked the part where Joy asked her students to create a daily schedule of their food intake. It is absolutely wonderful because the activity is very very closely related to students, and it is up to them to include what they want in the schedule, according to their preference or even the real situation in their life. But it can be further improved with providing students with a time guide.

All in all, Joy's was a meaningful and informative lesson but it could be better if Joy make the learning process more exciting with colourful pictures or words to bring students into the mood.

    3. Hello Joy, don't worry you did well and we all can see the effort that you've put in. :)

Also, be confident cos you're beautiful and you have a lot of potential in you! We all do, only in different areas :)

  2. On my part, I would like to thank you all for participating in my class, you are great students to work with :) And I would sincerely like to apologies for my spelling mistakes - those are my 'polish habits' which I grew up with. My fault. :)

The video seemed clearer when I selected it, perhaps on my mini laptop it presented well, but I will be more careful the next time.

The actual colorful pyramid was suppose to be shown after the article - in my head! It strike me only when you mentioned it was missing. My laptop, printer, usb was all in a big mess for the past 2 weeks, hence I had everything done on word microsoft and it all looked poor and grey and sad and boring, but I was aware of it and I was stressed about it before and while teaching.

The time is very individual to students as they are the only ones who know their daily schedule but perhaps I could have given a full example :)

This topic was really closely related to myself, as I am struggling with food disorder for quite some time now, and I know how teenagers especially girls are really fighting with acceptance, appearance etc. Their age is where usually many breakdowns arise and the risk of getting into anorexia or depression because of their physical appearance is really high. This would probably be in my next lesson :)

My confidence is actually low but I'm trying my best, hope it will improve very soon! Thank you! xxx

    2. No. Joy. I disagree. You are confident. It's just you are shy. You have improved so much. Don't you notice that? We are different. Some people can be so natural in front of others, but some cannot. One way to overcome stage fright is very useful for me--to enjoy the stage and immerse in your presentation. Besides preparation, relaxing is crucial because when you relax, your mind is free and the "block" seems to go away. Good job, Joy!

  3. Joy's lesson was meaningful and appropriate for secondary student. She started her lesson by reminding the students on the previous lesson(the appetizing foods) which was good. She continue by telling them that they should not consume only foods that look nice and delicious but healthy foods are more important for health.

She showed us a video and i wished it could be clearer.I hardly heard the words when the cartoon sing the 'food pyramid' song although it was fun to watch. But it was still a good set induction as it help students to recall their previous knowledge on the topic.

For the first activity, it was really interesting because the students could test their listening skill(song for set induction) and also their general knowledge. For improvement, she could use colored pictures to make the students more excited.

Another activity which was really good is when she asked the students to create their own daily meals based on the food pyramid. To make it more interesting, she could ask students to be more creative by asking them to draw their favorite foods(she can provide color pen) and present it in front.

Overall, I enjoyed Joy's lesson. Great job Teacher Joy!=))

  4. Good points—Joy chose a very important and helpful lesson for teenagers—health. She introduced the essential knowledge about food pyramid to students, and connected the pyramid with the exercise so that students got to know the categories of food. Moreover, the activity of designing a whole-day meal was meaningful because students decided what to eat based on their experience, preference and the lesson they learned in the class. Meaningful learning.
Most of all, Joy has improved a lot compared to the past her—very shy, always blushed. I have seen her become more talkative in front of the class with lots of body language and eye contact with students. Joy, please enjoy the stage. You are beautiful and have a good command of English, so no need to worry about anything. When you enjoy, you will never fear!
Aspects to work on—In terms of the activity—categorizing the food, she could have made it more challenging for students. For example, this is a great chance to involve science into the English lesson—biology and chemistry, the nutrition of certain food and their benefits. Besides, when designing a whole-day meal, it is necessary to specify the amount of each food. In fact, I am confused by the word “serving”. I don’t know how much a “serving” is. I am more familiar with 3 pieces of bread, two apples etc.

  5. Joy was a presentable teacher. The content of her lesson was meaningful and relevant for the students to apply in their daily life. I do believe that the video was informative. Unfortunately the audio was not clear. In addition, it was a good idea to ask students to fill in the food pyramid since they can relate their previous knowledge about it with a new information that they gain from the video shown. It is a good attempt when she tried to give a different handout for the low and higher proficiency students. Another activity that I like in her lesson was the 'planning your food intake for a day' activity. Since students were supposed to work in group, I think it will be a good oppurtunity for them to learn from each other. However, I did feel that Joy did not involve all the students in class. Maybe she can improve it by calling or asking students who were silent to participate more frequent. All in all, it was a good class and lesson and you have improved from the first lesson. Good luck.

  6. Joy is a such a sweet and beautiful teacher. She is always calm and have positive attitude towards her students. I really loved her class. The activity is good, since it is something related to the students life, student will able to answer. She did give the activity for the lower and higher proficiency students. It seems that she care for all the students in her class. There some spelling mistakes, students clearly can detect the error. It was so obscene. But, i guess it must be some typo error. The video was interesting and overall the lesson was meaningful. Good job sweety !!!

  7. I love Joy's dress! It would be wonderful to have her as a teacher who have fun in her dressing, as much as her classroom varieties.

Her lesson is essential for students as they are growing adults and would need these information to eat better. It would be better if Joy had given examples of meals because then it would spark more discussions and questions in class.

The video should also be either better in quality or another video in total, because once students give up in paying attention in class, it would be hard to get it back again later.
